The model of the first Swedish steam locomotive has been commissioned by the ”Förstlingen II” non-profit society, which has built a full scale working replica of this historic engine.
The prototype:
On 3 June 1853 it rolled under steam for the first time – the first steam locomotive ever built in Sweden. The test run took place at Eskilstuna Mekaniska Verkstad (now the Munktell Town). The locomotive was named ”Förstlingen” (The first one). The director of the workshop, Johan Theofron Munktell, had picked up the necessary know-how on a visit to England, since at this time no steam railway yet existed in Sweden.
The engine, which originally was constructed for narrow gauge, had been ordered by the Norberg Mining Railway. It was put on special wheels and hauled by oxen on the road to the customer. It was used when building the line and from December the same year for hauling iron ore. The mining railway was poorly constructed and soon went bancrupt. The engine was sent back to Eskilstuna and rebuilt for standard gauge, moving the wheels outside instead of inside the frames. After rebuilding it was sent to Nora-Ervalla Railway, the first standard gauge line in the country. There it remained in use until 1870, when it was totally worn out and was sold for scrap for 300 crowns. A few parts have been preserved at the National Railway Museum in Gävle.
In 1982 a project started with the prospect of building a full scale working replica of ”Förstlingen”. A non-profit society was founded. After strong efforts by members, donators and sponsors the engine could be exhibited under steam for the first time in 2004. The replica represents the engine in standard gauge state as running on the Nora-Ervalla line.
